Enter the Fat Dragon in Silverlake
Silverlake has a new food resident Fat Dragron serving up traditional Chinese dishes with a new twist. I saw the glowing red dragon sign a few nights ago but I couldn't make out what it was, I just knew I wanted to check it out. So this Sunday with some time on my hands and a empty stomach I popped into Fat Dragron.
The first thing I was struck by was how clean, cute and relaxed it was the second was the yummy aroma filling the space...think your mom's house while baking cookies. Turns out it was the homemade fortune cookies baking.
The fortune cookie was literally the best cookie I fortune or otherwise I have had in a long time. Yum!
Next ordered the Wonton Soup---I'm old school---if the wonton soup is on point then you have a found a good spot. This Wonton Soup was chicken bone broth based with roasted chicken, bok choy, dumplings filled with shrimp and pork.
The Wonton Soup was fresh and hot, but not as flavorful as I had wanted, I liked it, but I wouldn't recommend it as something you must try.
Next I ordered Mary's Orange Chicken again fresh and hot but not all that flavorful and came without rice (rice is sold separetly for $1) a first for this East Coaster where rice doesn't come with the meal. Okay LA.
All in all Fat Dragon kinda flamed out for me after the cookie (which I had first) it smelled so good! that the rest of the meal fell flat. Like I said I am an East Coaster where you can find amazing Chinese food on almost every corner. I get it Fat Dragon is trying to offer something new and I am all for it, but how about getting the basics down first before trying to put your own spin on it? Just food for thought and the rice thing stop it and offer it with the meal!
But, I would recommend giving it a try. Get the fortune cookie!
